AI that answers customers / job guide
AI customer support agents for chat and email: six options compared
The software handles
Answers customer questions in chat and email from your help content and systems, takes routine actions, and escalates the rest to your team.
Where people stay involved
Your team handles escalations, keeps the knowledge base current and reviews unresolved conversations, which decides how much the AI can resolve.
Short answer. If you want an AI agent on top of the helpdesk you already have, Intercom’s Fin works with Zendesk and Salesforce and is priced per outcome. Zendesk and Freshdesk customers can switch on their own vendor’s AI agent. Larger consumer brands with complex procedures compare Decagon, Sierra and Ada, which are rolled out with the vendor across chat, email and voice.
Check these before you choose
- Your helpdesk. An AI agent that works inside your current helpdesk avoids a migration; check which channels are supported for your helpdesk specifically.
- Pricing unit. Per resolution, per session and quote-based models behave differently; per resolution only bills when the AI closes the conversation.
- Actions, not just answers. Check whether it can look up orders, issue refunds or change bookings through your systems, and who configures that.
- Escalation. A warm handoff with the conversation history avoids customers repeating themselves.
- Rollout effort. Self-serve agents can start in days; enterprise agents describe multi-week rollouts.
Recommended by situation
AI agent on your existing helpdesk
Fin
Fin is priced per outcome and supports Zendesk tickets and messaging and Salesforce cases and messaging, so you can add it without changing helpdesk.
Trade-off: Channel coverage differs by helpdesk; check voice support for yours.
Already on Zendesk
Zendesk AI agents
Zendesk AI agents bill per automated resolution with an allowance included in plans, across messaging, email and voice.
Trade-off: Each AI agent works on one channel type, so cross-channel coverage means several agents.
Already on Freshdesk
Freddy AI Agent (Freshdesk)
Freddy AI Agent is sold in session packs on top of Freshdesk; when sessions run out, chats go to your team.
Trade-off: The chat agent requires Freshdesk Omni, and sessions are counted per 24 hours (chat) or 72 hours (email).
Complex procedures written in plain language
Decagon
Decagon lets support teams write operating procedures in natural language that apply across chat, email and voice, with warm escalations.
Trade-off: Vendor-led rollout of about six weeks; quote-based.
Large consumer brands paying for outcomes
Sierra
Sierra runs agents across voice, chat, email and WhatsApp in 59 languages and prices on outcomes such as resolved conversations.
Trade-off: Built for large enterprises; outcome definitions need careful contracting.
Enterprise, many languages and channels
Ada
Ada covers chat, email, voice and messaging apps with 60 languages for chat and email and native Salesforce, Zendesk and ServiceNow connections.
Trade-off: Voice supports fewer languages than chat and email; quote-based.

Before you switch one on
Audit your help content first: AI agents answer from it, so gaps and outdated articles become wrong answers. Start with one channel, usually chat, and read every unresolved conversation for two weeks. Expand to email and actions such as refunds only once the answers are reliable.
